New Signal Coming To 1490 On AM Dial

I'm guessing most of us are only peripherally aware of the so-called "X band" - the AM frequencies generally around 1610-1700. One of the three GTA stations that currently exist there is called CHTO at 1690, a primarily Greek language outlet.

Now they've been given permission by the CRTC for a repeater at 1490 AM to extend their signal into Etobicoke, Mississauga and Brampton. That slot may be among the worst for propagation on the dial, and this one will be unusual in one aspect - it will be only 23 watts day, with a boost to 770 at night.

This decision is a bit weird, because the Commission admits the station didn't make a compelling case for the need for the new transmitter and both Mississauga and Brampton are outside its area of licence. But in something of a logic stretch, they've decided that because they're a mostly Greek format that doesn't infringe on other ethnic stations in the GTA, it's OK to say yes anyway.

Can't resist saying it's all Greek to me, as an already noisy AM band will get just a little more crowded.

It's the second time CHTO has been allowed to extend its reach. In 2014, they were allowed to boost their power to 6,000 watts on their 1690 frequency.
