Video: One Man Radio Station Does It The Old Fashioned Way

It's not often you see a TV newscast in a major market like San Francisco doing a story on an unaffiliated radio station. But then KZRO in Mount Shasta, California is unlike almost any broadcast outlet left on Earth. Its total employee base is exactly one person, the owner and only on-air personality, a guy named Dennis Michaels, a broadcast veteran.

He runs the FM station all by himself out of his house and not only has listeners in his hometown but all over the world. The video that accompanies the story is pretty terrific and shows him running music not only off computers and automation, but also with turntables. And there's even a reel-to-reel in the background of one of the shots.

The place boasts a personally picked playlist of over 8,000 songs - and counting. Every time he hears something he likes or thinks is forgotten, he simply adds it to the list. Plus, he knows others are hearing him well beyond the signal range.

"Every time I hear something I like," he explained, "I place it in the rotation. I think we do well. We're tracking about 22,000 cities on the Internet. Australia, Barbados, Germany, Canada. Russia I track it because I can see ... right where the server is and it's always right at the Kremlin."

I've been listening online and I liked a lot of what I heard. A true throwback and a fun story about a veteran radio jock who loves the medium and strives all on his own to see it well done.
