The Hazards Of A Live Crowd Mic Are Evident During Jays' Game

There are hazards of being the only guy in a broadcast booth when you're doing the Blue Jays games, as Ben Wagner found out on Sunday. He's forced to take more pauses, where an analyst might otherwise fill in and that leaves the crowd mic audible for a few more seconds to anyone listening.

And so it was on Sunday's spring training broadcast when a Philadelphia player, Hunter Markwardt, came up to the plate. Wagner introduced him as part of the play-by-play and then took a pause. At which point someone - whether it was in the booth or in the crowd it was hard to tell - very clearly said across the network, "His name sounds like an STD!"

You could tell Wagner heard it because when he resumed, he was struggling to keep a straight face. The guy's a pro but sometimes on a live broadcast, the crowd can be even more entertaining.

Re: The Hazards Of A Live Crowd Mic Are Evident During Jays' Game

My wife & I often hear some gold when watching CCHL (Central Canada Hockey League, Junior A) games streaming on HockeyTV. The best was a few weeks ago, during a Hawkesbury Hawks home game at "the Bob"... bilingual Franco-Ontarian commentators chatting amongst themselves during the intermissions, sometimes tossing in a "tabarnak" or other Canadian French curse word.

But when the Hawks score, there's someone in the stands who makes some silly noises with a trumpet. On this one occasion, the trumpeter had taken a break or something, but later in the game, after a Hawkesbury goal, the trumpet returned, and clear as day, we heard someone mutter "oh f--k, he's back..."

On television a lot more of that heckler was heard. The heckler was yelling something along the lines of “You’re a Russian spy! You’re pro-Putin!” It just so happened Buck Martinez had paused and the whole thing was broadcast before he started speaking again.

Edit: found the TV clip, the heckling seems to have been directed at umpire Vic Carapazza, who is not well-liked by many Jays fans - https://streamable.com/en2mrh
