Television ratings for the Beijing Olympics are down for both CBC and NBC. More details from Bill Brioux at brioux.tv..

Not surprised by this. I tried to watch Homan & Morris when they were still alive in Mixed Curling
against Australia a few days ago on Sportsnet. Finally gave up. Not sure whether Rogers was attempting
to stretch things out for timing purposes or flaunting their features/production chops but all that and the
additional ton of spots and promos made it unwatchable. The curling appeared to be the least important
ingredient of the telecast. Someone needed to tell them the stars were on the ice.

Agreed....there seems to be less passion for these games?...too many commercials, incessant expert panels are being shown as much as the events themselves, typical heart jerking interviews with athletes that overcame some adversity that 'regular' people overcome every day, useless interviews, same events broadcast on multiple channels and the same time...it all disrupts the flow....hard to get into it...

The CBC is using some new tech the linked article calls "virtual teleportation," to make it look like Cdn. athletes are in their set. There's just one thing - the hosts are in Toronto, while the competitors are in Beijing. I'm not a fan of the Olympics and am trying my best to ignore it for the next two weeks, but this is pretty impressive.

That trick immediately reminded me of the first Orad virtual set at CHCH, during the "OnTV" era in the late '90s... totally obvious that "she's not there."

The coverage so far in my opinion has been pretty good. CBC has some excellent commentators for the various skiing/snowboarding competitions. The camera work is fantastic. CBC does have people in Beijing: they interview many athletes on site after their run and you will see the CBC mic flags. But that studio set up is amazing. I have seen some of the interviews and you wouldn't know that the athlete is not in studio with the sports anchor. I really like that they cross promo what is on TSN and Sportsnet or coming up on those networks. Both TSN and Sportsnet have overnight coverage in addition to what CBC has.
Haven't watched NBC too much but they seem to be less heavy on the long backgrounder features on athletes. Like CBC, NBC has more live programming later in the evening. Last time in Tokyo when a live event was on, NBC was still showing highlights or games from six hours earlier. They also have some very solid commentators for the events and their ratings should improve now that the US is starting to win some medals.

I remember CNN did this during the 2008 election. Wolf Blitzer interviewed someone in Chicago who appeared to be in the studio in Washington.

NBC news content might be down in ratings also, depending on how one views things...
