Retired Engineer Resurrects Dead AM Station In Home Of Original Owner

This isn't a local story, but I found it unusual enough that it might be of interest to some here. It's about a retired engineer in the city of Longview, Texas, who bought a defunct radio station, fixed up some badly damaged equipment and put it back on the air - from the living room of his house. To make it even stranger, that house just happens to be the home of the guy who started the station back in 1935. And the transmitter is located in his backyard.

The station, KFRO, is currently automated and airing oldies on 1370 AM and on an FM translator with no commercials. But he vows a staff and regular programming will be coming soon, all from the comfort of his living room.

There's a rather overlong 9-minute out-of-sync local TV video that accompanies the piece, but it shows what he's done and he talks about how it all came together. And one last thing - his is the only station in the entire state currently broadcasting in AM stereo. Unfortunately, they're not on the net yet, but that may come with time.

In the end, it's the story of a guy who knows he probably will never make any money from it, but fulfilled a lifetime wish to own his own tiny corner of radio heaven and made it come true. And by the way, he bought the place for the grand total of $5,000.
