The Building That Once Housed CHIQ Hamilton Getting A New Life

It's called the Radio Arts building and it used to be home to a Steeltown station that would eventually become what is now CHAM.

From the Hamilton Spectator:

"Back in November 1959, CHIQ 1280 AM radio opened there with a classical music format: “Hamilton’s New Love; Beautiful CHIQ Music,” read one promo.

"In February 1964, David Marsden — known as “Dave Mickie” — was spinning records for CHIQ, presumably still classical, even as the DJ hosted a “Teenage Dance” for fans of the Beatles at King’s Hall on King Street, the Spec reported."

So what's next for the "Radio Arts" building? The Spectator takes a look at the blueprints.

The building actually dates back to 1868 when it was built and opened as the second location of the "Canadian Sewing Machine Manufactory" . Entrepreneur Richard Wanzer had the four storey building designed to increase and streamline manufacturing space for his sewing machine company. Wanzer's company went bankrupt in 1892.

The brown aluminum cladding that surrounds the building covers the brick exterior and the multitude of windows on each of the four storeys...

Spec story mentions the Pigott Building on James Street South, which housed the CHML studios from 1931-1949.
