It's always a crapshoot when a talk show host takes live calls from listeners. Alex Pierson found that out the hard way Tuesday night, when a guy called up her show and started telling her she was far better than the 'crap that was on CFRB.'
Pierson's quick response: Oh no, we don't want to talk about them!
I remember doing a show once in the early 80s where some guy insisted on talking about the old line-up on CHUM-AM in the 60s, and we let him quickly say his piece and then hurriedly went on to the next in line. It's always an awkward moment when a listener unexpectedly brings up the competition. But it sure is fun if you're on the other side of the speaker!
Hey, at least in Alex's case, the guy liked her better than 1010!

It's funny last week I heard about 15 seconds of The Rush with Jay Michaels with Jim Richards guesting. Don't know what they were talking about but Jim said something about .".they could always get Gurdeep and Pooja to do mornings"...or something to that effect. I meant to check the podcast to find out what exactly they were talking about but forgot and I don't even remember what day it was that I heard this. It sounded like they were having some fun and the story on CHFI's new morning show had just run in the Star 3 or 4 days earlier. I think something like this is great and anyone listening who got the reference would think it was pretty funny.

One of the funniest things I ever heard happened in the 70s on WNBC New York, my all-time favourite radio station. And it involved the ultimate no-no, mentioning the competition.
At the time, the great Bob "Vernon With A V" was on opposite Dan Ingram on WABC in the afternoons. At one point, Ingram's famous WABC jingle ran with no explanation on WNBC, the entire thing unspooling over about 20 incredible seconds.
After it finished, Vernon came on and said in a cliched, mellifluous announcer's voice, "Dan Ingram is not here. Nor do we know where you can find him. Thank you." Into an NBC jingle and a record.
It was a stunning and very unexpected moment, but boy was it funny. All these years later, I still remember it.

I remember hearing an aircheck of CHUM in the 70's with Jim Van Horne on a Saturday evening. He had played couple of mellow or more adult songs, and went into yet another slower cut.... and he cracked over the intro of the song that this would likely kill it for any house parties that were tuning in tonight....and then he said, "I think somehow I have Bill Deegan's records." CFRB's Bill Deegan was actually on air Saturday night the same time as Jim. Very subtle and funny.

I remember listening to WKBW 1520 one afternoon and they were carrying commercials for a company called WGR Productions or something - nothing to do with its radio competititor at 550. Eventually the announcer came on and said something like "we are not encouraging you to listen to the competition - keep it right here on 'KB Radio."

Didn't CHFI do a promo or a contest when Don Daynard moved from CKFM mornings to CHFI? I seem to recall if Don "accidently" said the name of his old station, or messed up CHFI's call letters, and you were the first to call in there was a prize. I wasn't living in the GTA at the time, but I do remember hearing a promo on air making a big deal about Don getting settled in at his new home. So they would have had instances when the morning show host was saying the call letters of his old station and main competitor. CHFI may have even had a TV ad for this contest/promo as well.

When we were doing our shows on MOJO 640 in the early 2000's we'd actually pause during the live show and tell people to change the station and check out what was on 1010 or 590 at that time and then come back and call in to tell us what they were talking about and how lame those stations' shows were...
