Alan Cross Laments - & Let's You Hear - What An A.I. DJ Sounds Like

Sci-fi is filled with scenarios about robots taking over. Now Alan Cross lets you hear how they're doing it on radio as artificial DJs, and why he fears it's a trend that will continue.

And by the way - it's pretty amazing technology. You really can't tell it's a bot.

An AI-powered DJ for streaming services and radio? Yes.

Wow!  Radio Automation is now a world without "Borders"
(sorry I just had to)

It's not just DJs.  Copy you read online, in newspapers, and in magazines is starting to be written by AI.

- Not an industry person.  Just a guy with a love of Toronto radio.

I think this AI will be great for Countdown features & format flips.
Outside of that, people want personality.
Think about it
If a radio station goes live on location to a Freedom mobile store are people going to come on down to see a machine? Or will they want to meet a live radio announcer?
I can tell you right now, if I needed to get a new Smart Phone and an AI on the radio tried to tell me to come on down, the ad would be in one ear and out the other.
However, with a live person there is more desire to drop by.

Long story short, the promotions team should also be people, not a machine!

Was this not being tested or at least under research/trial at one of the Toronto Daily papers a few years ago?

Not sure about that, but Torstar and a few others have purchased The Canadian Press to help fill their pages, since so many of their own reporters and writers have been laid off over the years. So they may not need AI right now.

Eric Idle once said " I'm not afraid of artificial intelligence. I'm afraid of artificial stupidity."
