CBSC Calls CP24 On The Carpet For Incorrect Ticker Story

Ever wonder who at the station proofreads those “ticker” stories that go under the enhanced video on CP24? Turns out someone does – but maybe not enough.

The Canadian Broadcast Standards Council has come down on CP24 after a viewer complained about a major mistake in its crawl. The problem: it contained information that was diametrically opposed to what the station was actually reporting on air and it ran at least six times during the simulcast of CTV’s 6 PM news.

The error was kind of important, since it concerned the pandemic. It happened on March 31st, when the video report stated that Ontario Premier Doug Ford was expected to “ramp up” restrictions on citizens, including a lockdown, in time for an upcoming long weekend. But the ticker said just the opposite, stating, Premier Ford says an announcement coming tomorrow about plan to loosen restrictions in Grey zones.”

A viewer complained because this had been running repeatedly and was clearly inaccurate. CP24 admitted the mistake, stating it was pulled when a senior writer reviewed the crawls, which only happens several times a day. The viewer retorted that this information was vital and they wanted the station held to account.

The CBSC cited copious examples of previous mistakes by other outlets and concluded that CP24 breached its code, because a) the station is frequently on in waiting rooms and foyers with no sound and therefore many viewers would not have known it was in error and may have believed things were easing and b) deaf or hearing-impaired viewers couldn’t hear the correct reporting and would have relied on the accuracy of the ticker.

All of which means that CP24 will have to air this announcement several times over the next few weeks, admitting its mistake: The Canadian Broadcast Standards Council has found that CP24 breached the Canadian Association of Broadcasters’ Code of Ethics and the Radio Television Digital News Association of Canada’s Code of Journalistic Ethics on March 31, 2021. CP24 repeatedly broadcast inaccurate information in its news ticker. This breached the code articles relating to accuracy and correction of errors.”

I rarely get to see CP24, but I wonder how many other banner items get by without people noticing. There is so much info moving through the place at any one time, it’s surprising this doesn’t happen more often. That said, I’m betting there will be a lot more scrutiny on those news tickers in the future than there ever was in the past as a result of this. And that’s probably a good thing.
