Re: Fredrik Eaton obit

I was really surprised that there was very little coverage or even mention of Fred Eaton's passing, especially in Toronto media.  At one point Eaton's was the biggest employer in Canada other than the CN and CP railroads, and had over 75,000 employees across the country.  With their head office in Toronto they were likely the cities largest employer  for years and they also had various manufacturing plants in the city.

Eaton's were even involved with broadcasting and owned the biggest chunk of Baton Broadcasting for years.  However the Eaton family let the Bassett's manage Baton and to a certain extent CTV and never really got into the day to day operation of the network or radio and TV stations that they owned through Baton.   They did try around 1996 to buy the remaining shares of CTV that they didn't own but were unsuccessful.  And it was only a few years later that the department store filed for bankruptcy protection in 1999.
Living in Toronto as a youngster, always had good memories of Eaton's.

Re: Fredrik Eaton obit

One of the radio and TV stations that Baton partially owned for years was CKLW which was purchased from RKO in 1970.  People forget that CBC owned the other 50% of CKLW radio and television.  So the Big 8, Drake format, right down to the brash 20/20 news style was half owned by CBC until mid 1975.  That is when CBC agreed to acquire all of CKLW TV and Baton bought the remaining half of CKLW AM and FM.  I just think it is kind of funny that CBC was an owner of CKLW AM during some of their most successful and popular years, and they didn't touch a hair of the format or style.

The Eaton's and CBC were decent owners of CKLW TV and radio since they were responsible for building the new studios in 1972 that the TV and radio stations moved into on Ouellette Ave just in time for CKLW AM's 40th anniversary.  CBC Windsor and all of Bell Media radio stations are still at this location today.
