Why Is A Major Corus Show Running Nightly On A Bell Media Station?

Maybe it's because it's out west. Maybe there's some sort of special arrangement. Or maybe it's neither of those.

But I noticed that CKFR, the talk station at 1150 AM in Kelowna B.C., also carries Charles Adler's show out of Vancouver. What's the problem? The station is owned by Bell Media, while Adler's show is produced out of CKNW - a Corus-owned outlet. The program is three hours, but this place only takes an hour of it, before heading to a replay of Evan Solomon's CTV News Channel gig, followed by a reroll of other programming and then the new Jim Richards all nighter, all Bell Media shows.

It's certainly a strange arrangement and I'm not sure it happens anywhere else in Canada. I'd be curious if anyone knows how this odd amalgamation of sources that normally compete against each other came to pass.

Corus has no presence in Kelowna. Don't know if Corus sells spots nationally in the show, but if they do it's a win/win for both companies.

(They also normally run 3 hours...it's just an hour tonight becuase of a hockey game)

Isn't it a similar thing with The John Tesh Radio Show? Doesn't Bell Media/iHeartRadio hold the distribution rights in Canada, therefore giving Bell stations first crack at it if they want to carry it, and if not, then another station in the market can?

I seem to recall several years back it was carried almost exclusively on Astral Media stations (before their sale to Bell). Then when EZ Rock 97.3 in Toronto flipped formats to Boom in 2009, it was quickly picked up by CHFI.

Yes, Bell still syndicates Tesh, and that's probably the best example of syndicating to a competitor given that it's on a huge station, CHFI.

Bell have been a bit aggressive lately, giving their own stations priority with making two of their biggest shows exclusive to themselves with Seacrest on MOVE and recently moving Bobby Bones from Rogers' Country stations to their own PURE stations.

CHNL in Kamloops carries both Adler and Solomon; they are owned by Stingray.

It would be unusual in most places but there's a history of Corus shows being syndicated around the province of BC on non-Corus stations dating back to the Western Information Network which was based out of CKNW.  It offered daily talk shows, overnight shows, old radio plays and play by play to stations across the province.
