One Week Before Superbowl. How Low Can They Go??

Looking at the broadcast US network ratings from last Sunday.  Dreadful ratings for the big four networks.
Fox had only ONE program in prime time with over ONE MILLION VIEWERS!  Granted they were all repeats but come on, who is going to buy advertising time with pathetic numbers like that?  NBC and ABC both had at least one show under two million.  Didn't Sunday evening used to be a huge night for family viewing??

The only bright spots were 60 minutes, NCIS: LA on CBS, America's Funniest Home Videos and Who Wants to Be a Millionaire for ABC.    And the latter two have both seen their best years and are getting stale. Not many years ago ratings of 4 million would have a show cancelled in one week, but now it's a hit!

The surprise for me is how well America's Funniest Home Videos still does in the age of YouTube. A few years ago I had predicted AFV would die out because of YouTube, but I've been proven wrong.

Fox does tend to get much stronger ratings on Sunday nights when it has new episodes of its animated shows. Their new show The Great North got 6.1 million viewers for its second episode, which aired on January 17. Family Guy had its most recent new episode the same night and got 3.2 million viewers. The Simpsons is also still getting respectable ratings for some of its new episodes this season, with this season's Treehouse of Horror getting 4.9 million viewers. Bob's Burgers on the other hand hasn't had a new episode over 2 million viewers in over a year now.

Still, The Simpsons used to get up to 25 million viewers for its new episodes back in the early 90s, and Family Guy was getting over 10 million viewers for a new episode back in 2008. It's baffling to think there was a time that a full 10% of Americans were all watching The Simpsons at the same time almost 30 years ago.

Streaming has killed the network model. It's not over yet, but you can see the end from here. It's one of the reasons for the massive cuts at Bell this week.
