CJAD is to Montreal radio what CFRB is to Toronto - one of the major heritage stations in the city. The Quebec English talk radio giant officially turns 75 at midnight on December 8th and unlike co-owned counterpart CFRB, it's not keeping quiet about it.
The station's website has a special section devoted to the milestone, including a countdown clock, a 5 minute audio compilation of some of the most famous stories it's covered over the years, and another minute-long replay of its vintage jingles. They've been putting them up online since Nov. 6th.
What a difference to CFRB, which marked 90 years of broadcasting on Feb. 19, 2017 - and it passed by with nary a single word. The neglect was noted on SOWNY several days later.
I'll be curious to hear what - if anything - CJAD does next Tuesday. But at least it isn't going by unnoticed. You can listen to some of their special features and see a photo gallery here. Among the highlights - pics of an impossibly young Andy Barrie and Peter Shurman, long before they became major names in Toronto. And even one time SOWNY poster (and former CFRB P.D.) Steve Kowch turns up, too.

Growing up in Montreal, CJAD was on in our kitchen all day...my mom's favourite station. The soundtrack fueling my early love for radio. Great to see the 75th anniversary site paying tribute to some of the great stars like George Balcan ( worked with him at CF - the sweetest pro ever), Andy Barrie ( gave me my first break in radio), Mac Curdy, Paul Reid, Len Rowcliffe and many more ( Hi Rob B., Tommy S. Steve K.). Missing references to other great performers like Bill Roberts, Doris Clark, Rod Dewar, Vance Randolph and Dave Patrick. Congratulations to everyone who has contributed to making CJAD the legend it is over the decades. Good on Bell Media for celebrating this well.

In addition to their on-air marking of the milestone, they're going to do a series of podcasts that look well worthwhile.
From the Bell Media press release:
"CJAD 800 will also launch THE MIGHTY 800, a monthly podcast hosted by Trudie Mason, whose first episode will be available as of December 8 on iHeart Radio. Each month, the show will feature highlights from the station’s history and noteworthy events in Montréal. The first episode will present the story and career of the station’s founder, Joseph Arthur Dupont. The second will be devoted to host Paul Reid, while the next one will recount the events of the 1998 ice storm, including the collapse of CJAD 800’s broadcast towers."
By the way, that name "Joseph Arthur Dupont" is what the "JAD" stands for in CJAD. Interesting that the "RB" in CFRB is also for a name, Rogers Batteryless, the radio Ted Rogers Sr. was famous for inventing.

Tuesday was CJAD's 75th birthday. And its webpage is filled with greeting and good wishes. (It would have been great if RB had done this for its 90th. Perhaps on the 100th?)
Among those paying tribute: former CJAD personality John Moore (now the morning man on NT1010), ex-Global anchor Leslie Roberts and the grand statesman of Canadian news broadcasting Lloyd Robertson.
You can hear a ton of station remembrances here.
They also made the local TV news (co-owned CTV, of course.)
