CBS Airing Streaming Shows, Including New Star Trek, To Fill Fall Gaps

Love "Star Trek" but never got to see the new version because you don't have cable? The Eye Network has the answer for that.

Desperate to field some kind of original fall programming while production has been halted by COVID-19, the American network is borrowing shows from its pay-only CBS All Access and putting them in primetime. Among them: first season episodes of "Star Trek: Discovery," one of the main attractions of its online channel. There are others, as well, including some that have never been available in Canada before.

The move can't make Bell and its CTV Sci-Fi channel very happy but I'm pretty sure it won't be able to demand the show be blacked out on cable or satellite despite the fact it owns the Canadian rights. Over the air is generally treated very differently than online or cable, and for some, this will be the first chance to see these shows.

It's not the only time they've done this. Season one of "The Good Fight" aired on the network last summer, but that was a promotion to attract more subscribers to the streaming service. This time, they simply have nothing else new to debut.

Re: CBS Airing Streaming Shows, Including New Star Trek, To Fill Fall Gaps

Didn't CTV already air some of the new Star Trek shows when they first debut a few years ago?  They used it as a promo for SPACE back then and the fact that the full series was on the pay network (now CTV Sci-Fi). I am sure the first few shows of the new series (shot at Bell Media's Pinewood Studios) were shown on the main network the night after the first airing on SPACE and promoted the new Star Trek on the main network.  Bell is pretty good at cross promotion this way.

CBS running the shows will affect their own streaming service as much as CTV Sci-Fi.  Wouldn't be surprised if CTV decides to run the CBS episodes as well.

Re: CBS Airing Streaming Shows, Including New Star Trek, To Fill Fall Gaps

Last nights airing on CBS of Star Trek Discovery was a bit of a disaster in the 10-11 slot.  Only 1.6 million viewers turned in according to Showbuzz Daily.  CBS main network is using the CBS Access show to fill in some gaps in the schedule because of the lack of new material from the COVID production freeze.

Oddly enough the only "fill in" shows that have had any traction for the US OTA networks so far have both been Canadian imports.  Transplant on NBC and Coroner for the CW both originally on CTV and CBC have been performing reasonably well thus far.  Transplant winning it's timeslot every week and Coroner the highest rated show on the CW every Wednesday, in fact one of their higher rated shows.  However the CW has had a very weak summer schedule in terms of ratings.

Hmmm...CBS did not choose to air Twilight Zone, but City TV did.
Up against an all new Weakest Link Monday Sept. 28, I choose to record Twilight Zone and watch it later.
