For GNR 640, This Is Old News

There have been a lot of improvements over the years at GNR 640. Which is why I can’t believe this is still happening.

I started tuning in around 2 PM Saturday, only to hear a newscast from The Canadian Press. Nothing wrong with that, except as I listened I discovered that it was actually not the newscaster who was working that shift and that the cast was at least 2 days old! (Both CKTB and CHML had the proper up-to-date report.)

To make matters worse, the exact same newscast with the exact same anchor, copy and voicers continued to air every single hour for at least the next 8 hours – and as I post this, it’s possible it could go on that way until someone comes in to do live news early Sunday morning – if anyone’s scheduled to be there.

This isn’t the first time this kind of thing has happened on 640, which seems to experience this bizarre glitch an awful lot.

As if that wasn’t enough, the endlessly repeated newscast was followed by a weather report from Global’s Carla Bosacki, who warned of heavy rain all day Sunday and again on Monday. I was somewhat startled by that, since all the forecasts I’d heard indicated that any rain might move in late Sunday.

But when Bosacki reiterated that the rain would move in for holiday Monday, it quickly became clear – this was last week’s weather report!

Repeated two day old news and sports and a weather update that stems from last week.

I realize the place is on autopilot but surely in the 8 hours (and counting) this has been going on, someone would have noticed and fixed it! It makes them sound ridiculous and it doesn’t do much for The Canadian Press’ reputation, either, even though it’s not their fault. But listeners have no way of knowing that.

If no news is good news, than surely old news must be bad news. This happens too often at the station. Someone needs to fix it once and for all.

Just caught their 7 AM newscast Sunday and it's still Groundhog Day. Exact same ancient newscast has now been running for at least 17 hours straight. Incredible.

Once Roy is back in studio, maybe he can rip and read , like I did in the early days of small market radio where at the end of my shift, I had to sweep the floors, empty the garbage, lock the doors then deliver the key to the station owners mailbox at his house on my way home. Lol.

And it's over! Their 8 AM newscast was done by their local newscaster and not CP. I will be listening when he's done later in the day and they go back on auto pilot to see if history continues to repeat itself. Although I'll miss that endless Sagar Meghani report from AP...

It appears they're back on track and today's news is airing, well, today. What a concept!
