The Ghostly Radio Station That No One Claims To Run

This isn’t a local story by any means and it’s well known to some. But it’s still a fascinating look at the world’s weirdest broadcaster. “The Buzzer” isn’t a branding slogan. Instead it’s a bizarre Soviet Union era radio station located in the middle of nowhere that serves a mysterious purpose.

The article speculates that one of them may even be avoiding - or launching - a nuclear war.

Shortwave fans have known about “number stations” for years -  a place where generic voices come on occasionally and repeat a series of numbers that seem to have no meaning unless you have the code to decrypt them. But this one is even more bizarre because it’s mostly just the sound of buzzing, sometimes interrupted by a word or two.

No one has ever been able to figure out exactly who runs it or why it's there, but it’s been on the air for decades and remains a SW fixture long after the fall of the old Soviet Union.

You can catch the latest “buzz” on this strange station here.

I posted about this on an earlier incarnation of this board. It's an interesting station. Additional weird radio worth listening to: The Conet Project.
