If you have HD, it means no static.   Like digital tv... it works or it doesn't..  BUT when the main channel is in hybrid mode as CKPC and CIDC's main signals are, it falls back to analog normally with no to little change.   You can hear the difference in quality when in HD..  the signal has more audio frequency bands over the Analog signal.     Fewer sub channels in HD, normally also gives more audio bandwidth to what's there.   

CIDC will likely take on AM530, Jewel 885 and perhaps Proud (which would help extend the week signal for Proud and Jewel).

They also could add HD to Proud and use it to fill in the holes downtown that CIDC has.  

Stations using their HD correctly in the area are KX 94.7/KX96.   They kept their Smooth Jazz alive as a internet station and have added it as HD2 on both 94.7 and 95.9 and seem to have some success with it.  They have hosts, and have heard some promos/spots on it.   

The only way people can care enough about HD is offering programming that is not available with regular sources.      Car streaming just isn't there for most people yet, and lacks local that radio can provide.

If HD were a bigger thing, the alarming concern is that the Evanov radio group could easily shift ads so that AM 530 targets the Multicultural Toronto businesses (rather than Brampton and area) and Jewel 88five could air more Toronto/Scarborough ads. (rather than their proper place of licence) 

I only spew this opinion because of what went on at 103five already...
