95.1 and/or 95.5 FM Scarborough?

Fusion radio Scarborough FM coming soon? (@ 95.1 or 95.5?)

"Fusion Radio currently broadcasts radio online 24/7 (fusionradio.ca) with over 30 different show hosts and DJs. Our recently obtained FM frequency analysis report confirmed two frequencies available for our FM radio expansion in Scarborough, 95.1 and 95.5 Mhz.
To fund the expansion and bring FM radio back to UTSC, as well as increase the quality and accessibility of a range of services that we provide for the University, campus groups, and students, we require more adequate funding."

Will students willingly pay more money for it?

"Scarborough Campus Community Radio Inc. (SCCR, also known as Fusion Radio) is seeking consent from its members to increase its student fee. The proposed increase is for $8 per term, from $4.85 to $12.85. The increase would come into effect in the 2016 Fall academic session (for registered full-time undergraduate students)."

The purpose of this requested increase is to:

1) Allow for the remaining phases of FM expansion (radio equipment upgrades, tower implementation and CRTC/Industry Canada licensing) and achieve the goal of having an on campus over-the-air radio station at the University of Toronto Scarborough (both St. George and Mississauga currently have FM radio stations).

2) Provide additional support and staff opportunities, with a focus on employing students and providing more merit based grants, club sponsorships, and live event services such as sound, video, lighting and news coverage.
Facilitate on-campus student talent and media skills development.

3) Increase the reputation of UTSC by offering industry quality radio, media production, and networking services to its students.

4) Provide necessary capital to invest in opportunities that will benefit and engage the campus and community such as celebrity talent for events/concerts.

Re: 95.1 and/or 95.5 FM Scarborough?

Whichever frequency it will have extremely limited range. Each is first adjacent channel to Corus' Hamilton 95.3.

The big broadcasters generally have a "take no prisoners" stance when it comes to short-spacing to their legacy stations.  Either operation will probably be directional, and under 100 watts - that is if Industry Canada approves.   Not likely corus would allow any "theoretical" interference.  The big question is whether U of T needs so many FM frequencies.   Why not podcast and consolidate the "best of" on their high-powered transmitter.

In a perfect world, Fusion is a great starting point, eventually steering those who are most interested (and professional sounding) over to CIUT.

I like to think it's good to have a home to iron out wrinkles even before getting into CIUT.

IF Fusion radio wants to operate as a professional (community) radio station on FM, then their best bet is to argue that they are not targeting downtown Toronto, and instead serving the Scarborough community.
(or Scarborough/Pickering if need be)

Different stations, different places.

Rock 95 (FM 95.7 Barrie) is Scarborough's radio station of choice by a wide margin

Any activity that messes with Rock 95 reception will be met with hostility

The vote today was made for 95.5, 95.1 as the alternate choice.
(this was a mere "hands up" vote, separate from the fee vote)

Fusion staff is not worried about what a radio station out of Barrie has to say,
They are more concerned with what Durham Radio inc and Corus has to say about all of this.

I believe very strongly Fusion will be lucky to get anything up and running just past the building's parking lot.

Students will now be paying a $12.85 Student Levy instead of $8
simply because a vote for more student funding of Fusion Radio won the go ahead...
