If it is a scam, odd it gets so much news coverage every year..

Well, shame on the news media then if they keep making this a thing every year. I guess if wiki says so, it must be true?

Of course not!

Wikipedia is only as good as the sources an article's writer uses...or in too many cases doesn't.

In this case when I opened and read many of the 18 footnote links the author provides including Guardian pieces,  I personally came to the same conclusion that grilled.chesse posted.  I did so based on that reading, (while recognizing that there were also writings that support the claim) not just because it was posted on a Wiki page.
