Did the Toronto media drop the ball on the Auston Matthews charges?

Cover-up or incompetence?

Re: Did the Toronto media drop the ball on the Auston Matthews charges?

It may just be a sign of the times.

With media cutbacks resulting in record staff reductions in Sports departments and newsrooms in general;  I can see how an off-season misdemeanour arrest in a hockey "market"  like Arizona might slip through the cracks.  The era of specialist beat reporters who followed the minutia of their assigned sport 52 weeks a year is a thing of the past.

I'm not trying to excuse the media...just a thought.

How would you present it?    Please be specific.

If these so-called "insiders" didn't know, they should have.

Really? Aside from the media, Kyle Dubas and the Maple Leafs found out the way everyone did - on Twitter. Even before the media cutbacks no one was monitoring police reports in Scottsdale every day. The only people who screwed up here were Matthews, his agent, his lawyer and his equally graceless father.

Either Matthews, or his father, or both, is/are as dumb as a bag of hammers.

Apparently the security guard went first to his family. Pro tip folks: recognize when you are in over your head and someone is handing you a lifeline.

Instead of taking it, his father denied the entire episode to her (not clear if he lied for Matthews, or was lied to by him - either way...), and as a result she went to the police and he got charged and lost his chance to be Captain of the Toronto Maple Leafs. And now he is instead Captain Underpants.

If Matthews was a football, basketball or baseball pro it would have come out 3 hours after it happened...but it's an American hockey player from Arizona that plays for a Canadian team...that's basically crickets down there...still a stupid move to try and cover it up...it was only a matter of time before this exploded considering it's Toronto and the Leafs
