Entercom Victim Of Ransomware Attack - Possibly Including Buffalo

It's not entirely clear which radio stations were affected across the U.S., but the linked article indicates a leaked internal memo (below) notes it was "in all offices across the country." That would appear to include all the stations in Buffalo.

And there are a lot of them. Entercom owns WBEN, WGR, and WWKB on AM, and WKSE (Kiss 98.5), WLKK (107.7) WWWS (107.3 & 1400) and WTSS (aka Star 102.5) on FM. Ransomware effectively takes over all the computer systems at a station and locks employees out of them. That can make it impossible to play music or spots, access news copy or log calls on phone-in shows. RadioInsight says that, in this case at least, the machines that played the music were unaffected. So most were able to continue without listeners realizing what happened.

This is an all too common crime these days, that's plagued hospitals, city halls and other key hubs. Because the information is so sensitive and the thieves threaten to erase the data after a certain time passes, many organizations simply pay the outrageous fees, leading the plotters to keep infecting other companies.

It appears Entercom refused to give in, which is to their credit. But if you've ever worked in a radio station and your computers went down, you'll know how serious this is.

Ortis is described as an Ottawa intellectual and an academic that was seen as arrogant by some in Canada’s national security establishment.

No, it's not the right thread. In fact, it has nothing to do with any of the threads on the board, which is dedicated to local TV and radio. Perhaps you're looking for a news forum? I get that you've got a lot to say since joining us yesterday, but please at least stick to the topic. Thanks.
