MLB Play-By-Play Vet to Miss 1st Game In 30 Years

Tom Cheek, the late Blue Jays play-by-play man, had an incredible record of having never missed calling a single game in 27 years, That ended when he was diagnosed with cancer, the disease that ultimately claimed him. Now another Major League Baseball vet is taking a few days off - but for him, it's the first game he'll have missed in an astounding three decades.

If you've ever listened to an out-of-town scoreboard on the The Fan, you've likely heard John Sterling. He's been the voice of the New York Yankees since 1989 and hasn't taken a single game off since the death of his sister in the late 80s. At 81, he's described only as being "ill" and will sit out the upcoming Tampa Bay series, leading into the All Star Break, ending an amazing streak that's very rare in radio.

John Sterling, longtime radio voice of the Yankees, will miss his first broadcast in 30 years

I like John Sterling and will miss him when he's off the Yankees games. (Like George Steinbrenner, born on the Fourth of July

Ernie Harwell missed one game during his time on Tigers radio, 1961-1991, for his brother's funeral.
