Leafs Playoff Game Ends Up On 680 News

With the Jays mandated to play on The Fan and with Rogers turn to carry the Leafs, the powers-that-be were in a bit of a dilemma: where to put the Blue & White on Wednesday night? It turns out they made news here by not making news at all, interrupting the wheel on CFTR to broadcast the home game.

I suppose they had no choice but if I was an average listener stuck in my car and tuning between 590 and TSN 1050 looking for the play-by-play, I might not think to turn on 680. I'm not sure if this is a first or not but I can't quite recall it happening before - although it probably has.

Yeah, they didn't have much choice here. One of the cardinal rules of the newswheel format is that you *never* stop it, but even WCBS 880 has regularly carried play-by-play.

Sucks if you're 590's PD and ratings aren't what they should be -- losing that guaranteed little boost.

It's too bad they didn't try to combine the formats. I can hear Joe Bowen now: "Auston Matthews gets it to centre, speeds by two defenceman, he's on a breakaway! He shoots - but first, traffic and weather together on the ones..."

it was announced before the playoffs started that cftr would get some games.  i think there's one other scheduled game on 680, if the series lasts that long.  given what's going on right now on the ice, it will be a 7 game slug fest.
