Ex-CFTR Morning Man Recalls How He Avoided Playing A Song He Hated

John Records Landecker wasn’t at CFTR for very long, but last weekend, he was inducted into the Radio Hall of Fame, primarily for his work as a jock on the legendary WLS in Chicago.

In a pretty terrific interview (also featuring his daughter, who stars on the online series “Transparent”) that appeared on the WGN-TV morning news, Landecker was challenged to do an intro to a randomly chosen piece of music, discussed the origin of his trademark “Boogie Check,” (which he refused to bring to his stint in Toronto, something I still consider a mistake) and in the best part of the piece, tells the story of how he despised Debby Boone’s “You Light Up My Life,” and figured out ways not to play it despite it being a hit at the time and in high rotation, and then managed to get his P.D. to go along with it.

You may need a VPN to play this for some reason, but the one that comes with the Opera browser works just fine if you don’t have one.
