$300 million is over two years.  Let's see what all these new journalists and shows can do.  If only a small percent of new people begin to learn how to manage their money, keep themselves out of unnecessary debt and eventually invest, that $300 million investment on CBC Money will be well spent.  This could also be a great tool for people who are more comfortable with personal finance with investment advice and retirement planning.  I don't really see a downside here.

By the way, we are both retired, so we are getting a lot of our "hard earned tax dollars" back are we not?  Ahhh, the cycle of life...

Or actually, our public schools.

Sure; but conservative governments keep cutting their funding.

It doesn't matter. No amount of money will ever be enough. And I know this is federal and not provincial, but that $300 million given to the CBC would certainly be a boon to our school systems. Or health care. Or housing. Or...

These are all provincial.

Well, I'm glad there putting effort into alberta, while your at it, what about an offis in the east-coast, in halifax?
But, is the east-coast as much of a finantial centre as much as the west-coast and ontario are?
The east-coast I guess is being reprisented in eurovision while alberta gets cbc money.

I miss the days when what was then CBC Newsworld had output from Calgary, Winnipeg, and Halifax in addition to Toronto. Right now everything on CBC News Network is from Toronto except for a couple of hours in the early evening from Vancouver, the Friday & Sunday editions of The National, also from Vancouver, and Power and Politics from Ottawa.

Yes, I acknowledged that in my post. ("I know this is federal and not provincial.") But the feds also have a Health Minister (Marjorie Michel)  and a Housing Minister (Gregor Robertson) just for two examples. That money could have been disbursed by either one to help the causes federally. Or they could have used it to help in places (like the cash strapped provinces) where it's really needed most. And I respectfully suggest that's not the CBC.

It's pretty presumptuous of you to suggest I'm retired when you have no idea if that's the case. In either event, I'm not getting a lot of my "hard earned tax dollars" back. Again, pretty presumptuous of you to suggest what my financial situation is when you know nothing about it.

I do know I don't want my "hard earned tax dollars" going to a broadcast entity I almost never watch or listen to 98% of the time and which I feel is already very well supported by the feds. It's the only amorphous organization that gives no real benefit to me, yet forces me to pay for it whether I want to or not.

That $300 million could go to any number of existing government programs. Like housing. Or even health, such as cancer research (which I have had) or Alzheimer research (which my mother suffered from at the end of her life) instead of making the next "King Of Kensington." I can't speak for you, but I know which one I would choose without even the slightest hesitation.

Hope you're enjoying your retirement.

I never said anything about your financial situation, and you are right, I don't know and don't care.  So you are saying you are not retired? Or you just don't want to say?  Regardless, you will receive back some of your hard earned tax dollars every month.  Sort of like paying for the CBC, you will get money back whether you want it or not.

As we have said many times, CBC/Radio Canada funds come out of general tax revenues.  So you don't have the option of opting out.  Just like all government programs that use tax dollars.

And I hope you are enjoying your retirement or whatever your situation is.
