If A Morning Show Host Works Election Night, Who's On The Next Day?

It's a question AM640 will have to work out before the end of the month. The station is already running promos touting its muncipal election coverage on October 26th, as the race for Toronto mayor comes down to the wire. The promotion tells listeners that Greg Brady will be up late bringing listeners the results and commentary as the polls come in, which makes perfect sense since he's also run for office and knows what it feels like.

But he's also due to be on the air at 5:30 AM the next day. If the results come in late, as they often do, he can't obviously do both shifts. So who takes his place on the all important day after morning show? My guess is Rob Fai, although he's in B.C. and can't possibly really know the major players in this horserace and other areas like Mississauga.

Is he the best person to do a recap when the sun rises on a new (or old) regime at City Hall? Not that 640 has a huge listening audience at any time of the day, but it's a delicate dance - do you put your morning man on at night and forget about the next day or is it possible he could sleep over and get up and be back on the air groggy but present at 5:30 AM?

So far, CFRB hasn't announced its plans for election night, whether John Moore will be part of the team or if they'll scrap the nationally broadcast "Shane Hewitt Show" in favour of local results or just local cut-ins. I'm betting John Tory will be involved in some way. With just over two weeks to go, I guess we'll have our answers soon.

Back to seriousness, I wonder how much attention they'll give to other important races, especially Mississauga? Will we hear just Toronto results or will Vaughan, Brampton, Ajax, Oshawa and others be at least mentioned once in a while on the radio? Or will all the attention be given to just Chow & Bradford and other local council races?

I'm pretty sure TV coverage will have them all - I used to do the election night boards for my station, and we had EVERYTHING, even out of town numbers. For radio stations like 640 and 1010 that technically no longer even have actual newsrooms or reporters, it wouldn't surprise me if they barely acknowledged anyone outside of Toronto. (Well, except for Mississauga which is becoming a fascinating if not dirty and personal political race.)

Perhaps they'll just refer listeners to their websites to check out the latest numbers for their areas.

Funny beatles references.
But, the serious point is, 640's actualy doing election coverage?
I thoght the only ones in the market doing election coverage were cbc, 1010, and 680.

AM640 is the only one I've heard actually running promos for their coverage. I just heard it again, and it says both Ben Mulroney and Greg Brady will host from 6-10 PM that night. Hopefully that will be long enough to declare a winner. There's no way they can end the coverage until a victor is declared.

I did so many of these over the years that I can absolutely say in most cases, the local races are generally over before 10 at night. But if it's close or there are problems at the polls, anything can happen. I suppose it's possible for Brady to finish at 10 PM and be on again at say, 6 AM the next morning, but the best laid plans etc.

I know CBC Radio is planning extensive coverage, because they have the personnel to go out to key locations and report live. 680 will also provide constant updates from the various campaign headquarters, although I'm sure they'll keep their newswheel going.

But I have not heard anything about 1010's plans. I'm assuming they must be doing something.

Must be a first then, don't remember 640 ever doing much election coverage.
And with the layoffs at corus, I did'nt think they would even have the staff for that.

Toronto stations will haveto cover missisauga in some way.
Do you think sauga's going to do that?
I don't.
CJMR and red fm might serve the punjabis with election coverage, but my guess is sauga's going to air slop, that station's gon to the dogs.

I would be surprised if CJMR or Red FM has the staff to even cover the election in any way. Maybe a headline about who won the next day, but I doubt they'll even be live that night.

Red will and does.
I tune them in sometimes because they will insert some english into there programming.
There serving there community well, to me, its like a mix of 1010, chum, and chfi for the southasians and more of a chfi for the portuguese, I've even heard some english soft ac songs from the old chfi days on there on weekend evenings.
Out of all the ethnic stations, they've stole chin's place serving the ethnic communities how they should be served, just like what we get even thogh ours is getting sloppy, but in there own languages.
91.9's more like a bollywood jukebox with programming from ottawa, cmr's just 1 long add, cjmr might be a close second, cina's to low-power, and wtor I don't tune into because its all in punjabi and urdu with little english inserts, but what'ive notised, its 1 long add and mosk on the am dile.

They can just simulcast Global.

Yes, they certainly could. But they're already running promos for Mulroney and Brady, so it seems they have radio coverage planned. Which doesn't mean they can't use Global reporters on cut-ins.
