Emmy Awards Show Goes To Amazon - But Non-Subscribers Can Still Watch

First it was the Academy Awards going to YouTube.

Now the Emmys - saluting the best in television - are being gobbled up off of broadcast TV, winding up on Amazon Prime starting next year. The price tag? Some $120 million.

But even if you're not a Prime member, you'll still be able to watch it if you want. Amazon has promised to put it outside their paywall, so non-subscribers can see the show.

So does this mean CTV, its traditional home in Canada, will now lose the rights to it? It's likely, given how Amazon often keeps worldwide or North American attractions like Major League Baseball exclusive to its service. But perhaps they'd be willing to do a licensing deal since they're giving it away for free in any event.

The Emmys used to be the only award show I ever actually watched, given that it honoured the best in television. But now that separate streaming service shows seem to win everything and broadcast programs are barely even nominated (except, it seems, for ABC's "Abbott Elementary") I don't even bother. Half the shows I've never seen and many of the others I've never even heard of.

So if they win a prize it means nothing to me. Given that the ratings for the event continue to fall, I'm clearly not the only one.
