The Untold History Of The CW, 20 Years Later

It was a network built on the demise of two others. And some here still don't receive it on cable in Canada.

The CW was a merged network that rose from the ashes of the WB and the UPN in the U.S., and for a while, it actually had some compelling programming.

Those behind shows like The Vampire Diaries, Gossip Girl, The Gilmore Girls and Arrow recall the early days of the network, and what it has sadly become.

This may not be interesting reading for those who never got Channel 23 from Buffalo or WPIX from New York, but it's a rare insight into the rise - and in my mind, the fall - of a U.S. TV network and how we got here.

Variety also did a story on this, and reminds that the CW is now the home of perhaps the most CanCon of any network in U.S. broadcasting.

"...the CW continues to focus on acquisitions — particularly from Canada — to fill its scripted needs. That includes “Law & Order Toronto: Criminal Intent,” from Lark Prods., Cameron Pictures, Universal Global TV and Citytv; “Wild Cards,” from Blink49 Studios, Front Street Pictures and Piller/Segan, commissioned for CBC; “Sullivan’s Crossing,” from Reel World Management, CTV and Fremantle; and next up, “Private Eyes West Coast,” from Lionsgate Canada, Piller/ Segan and commissioned for Corus Entertainment in Canada."
