Shame On John Moore For This Interview!

I don't usually get editorial here, but this was an extreme example of a radio interview that completely missed the mark.

I was out walking the dog Thursday morning listening to CFRB, when John Moore introduced his regular segment with Toronto Police Chief Myron Demkiw. He started off with a breaking story about some 9-1-1 lines being down in some areas of the province, a legitimate question. But then he went on to talk about shootings being down, the after effects of the big storm earlier this month, the great work the force is doing and a ton of other mostly puffball questions.

But it’s what he didn’t ask that had me aghast. The Toronto Star has a front page story on its website and several sidebars (see below) detailing stunning revelations about the Toronto Police “Project South” scandal, a series of events that appears to make this city’s police force amongst the most corrupt in all of North America.

The revelations were astounding and I kept waiting for Moore to ask the Chief about it, including one key question: “This happened on your watch. Why should you keep your job?”

That is the question anyone listening was waiting for. But Moore never even broached the subject. I have no idea if there was some agreement that it would not be brought up, and Demkiw would undoubtedly have used the old canard about it being before the courts, so he can’t comment. But asking about why he’s keeping his job would not have fallen into that category.

And there's no way Moore didn't know about it. He's told listeners before that he always read the newspapers online before his show.

John Moore is usually a very good interviewer. But boy, did he miss the mark on Thursday morning and I can’t help but wonder why.

He doesn't want to be excluded from those fancy golf outings.

Perhaps Mr Moore was told in advance not to brooch that topic?

I thought of that and it's certainly possible. But as a host of a radio show, he should have refused if that happened.

You can't ignore the elephant in the room just to get 15 minutes of Demkiw's time. It was a glaring omission and it stood out like a sore thumb, hurting both Moore and CFRB's credibility, such as it is.

I heard that interview but hadn’t seen The Toronto Star’s front page yet. It took me a minute when I did finally start reading it and thought about Moore’s Demkiw interview, where none of it was mentioned. Pretty disappointing.

Hard questions?  Moore would rather chat about the Chief's collection of tea pot cozies.
