Mercedes Stephenson Leaves Global For Globe & Mail
She's the Global version of Vassy Kapelos - smart, a great TV presence and very knowledgeable about Canadian politics. And now Mercedes Stephenson will putting that expertise to use for a new employer - the Globe & Mail.
Stephenson, had been one of the network's highest profile political reporters for the past eight years, including hosting the weekend "The West Block" and being head of their Ottawa Bureau. She'll assume the same role at the newspaper, minus the on-air duties. She had not been seen for a few months, after taking maternity leave, which ends on the first day of her new position.
David Akin will now be the permanent host of the Sunday morning show.

Global National correspondent Jeff Semple was actually announced as the new permanent host of The West Block, which is an excellent choice, and a relief to know that Ben Mulroney will no longer host the show.
Mercedes Stephenson was a great host, and G&M are lucky to have her.

You may be correct. The Broadcast Dialogue article seemed to indicate Akin would be taking over the Sunday show, but if you read it a different way, it could also say that Akin will be their Ottawa Bureau Chief, leaving the weekend program to Semple. We'll see on Sunday, when the show returns for its fall debut.

The official release from Corus does state that Jeff Semple will be the new host of TWB, so Akin must be taking on the bureau chief duties. David Akin is also a good choice for the bureau chief role.
