This Bizarre Radio Station Only Runs About 1 Week A Year

You’ve probably heard of Burning Man, a get together cosmic gathering that takes place once a year in the middle of the Nevada desert, about 100 miles from Reno. It is one of the strangest events on the planet, consisting of people listening to eclectic music, taking copious amounts of often illegal substances and wearing weird garb – or often, nothing at all.

It’s one of the strangest 1960s-like “be-ins” left on the planet and it attracts thousands of normal and not-so-normal people every summer.

There are no guest musical performers, with attendees providing all the entertainment. It goes on for just one week annually, culminating in burning the effigy of a man in the darkness (hence the name of the festival.). It is literally about letting your freak flag fly with no judgment from anyone else around you, since they’re also going their own strange way.

But did you know this temporary community also has its own radio station? BMIR (Burning Man Information Radio) broadcasts only for about one week at 94.5 FM, informing those in the diverse crowd about upcoming events, happenings, and other information including weather, performances, traffic and food. In between all that, the staff of volunteers run the place, after which it presumably goes silent until the following August.

Most of us will never go to the hippiest  - if not the happiest – place on Earth, but you can listen to the radio station while it’s on. You can hear it online here.

Re: This Bizarre Radio Station Only Runs About 1 Week A Year

Yesterday, Sept.7th, I was station surfing and ended up on AM640 for a bit. There I listened to part of an interview with a guy who has been to Burning Man the last 14 years and does it so he can work at their radio station, something he dreamt of doing as a kid, he said, wonder if that’s him in the photo! Burning Man sounds interesting, but not for me, you have to bring everything you need for starters and it’s located two hours from anywhere, ok……

That interview was actually David Cooper, normally the host of The Last Show on AM640. He took a few weeks off from his program to go to the festival, something he says he's always wanted to do. He also does volunteer at that one-week only station, but that wasn't him in the photo.

That means his substitute host was interviewing the actual host, on the final day of Burning Man. Almost surreal.
