ABC Sues FCC Over Challenge To TV Licences

This is a huge story in the U.S., and it's something to keep an eye on.

As you may remember, the White House began a vendetta against ABC late night host Jimmy Kimmel when he began needling Donald Trump on air and made statements about the killing of Charlie Kirk, leading to a boycott of his show on some Conservative-owned stations.

Not satisfied with that, the new hardline chair of the FCC decided to threaten the network's owned and operated TV stations' (like WABC and KABC-TV) licences early, vowing to force them off the air.

Now the Disney-owned company has taken the unprecedented step of suing its overseer, alleging it's violating its First Amendment guarantee of free speech.

“Acting through the Federal Communications Commission, the Administration has waged a retaliatory campaign against ABC for a single reason: it disapproves of what ABC broadcasts,” the suit states. “That campaign began in this Administration’s earliest days and has only intensified since.”

This is a fascinating story and I believe it's unprecedented for any U.S. government to go after a TV network in this way because of its editorial stance.

And other than costing ABC a small fortune for the suit, I can't see the FCC being successful in removing any licences for the TV stations. It's pretty clear this is a vindictively motivated violation of the First Amendment and I would be stunned if any court saw this any other way.

Stay tuned. This may be best TV drama that isn't actually on TV.
