CBS' Famed News Division Could Be Leaving New York

Talk about a bad day at Black Rock.

As several U.S. Attorneys-General try to stop CBS network owner David Ellison from merging with Warner Brothers, the controversial head honcho is threatening to leave its longtime headquarters on West 57th St. in New York City. It's part of a ploy to get the attention of the New York A.G., who is among those attempting to block the deal.

"CBS News currently calls the CBS Broadcast Center on the West Side of Manhattan its world headquarters. The complex, which is famously labyrinthine, occupies nearly a full city block. CBS has had at least some operations based at the West 57th Street block since 1952."

That space is said to be worth billions of dollars and hundreds if not thousands of jobs would go with it.

So where would the Eye Network go? Sources indicate more conservative states like Tennessee, Georgia or Texas.

Critics have accused Ellison of trying to turn one of the oldest broadcast news organizations in North America into a mouthpiece for the current occupant of the White House. But recent changes to its once legendary "CBS Evening News" have backfired, with ratings plunging, as viewers flee to ABC and NBC at 6:30 PM.

Maybe Ellison should think through the optics of abandoning the city and leaving the physical presence to ABC, NBC and Fox.  I'm sure the on-air talent with their penthouses and brownstones would just salivate at having to move to Dallas or Nashville.

Fort Worth, Texas wouldn’t surprise me. KTVT is a major news bureau for CBS and for a time was the base for a hybrid national-local newscast aired on a number of CBS-owned independent and CW affiliates including WKBD in Detroit.

Sounds like they're getting ahead of the coming divide.
