We've all done it - if I ran that radio station, I'd fix their problems.

Well now you can put your money where your computer is. A newly launched online game called "Airwave Empire" puts you in the driver's seat of being in charge of a real radio station in various U.S. markets, with the goal of trying to increase ratings - and beating the competition. 

The game was invented, perhaps ironically, by a TV exec. who loves his sister medium. And maybe the best part is there's no initial sign up and no charge. (Subsequent games and markets will cost you about $5 a month for a subscription.)

You can test your skills at the "station" you run for free for the first game. And you don't even have to play in the "modern" era. 

"An interesting facet of the game is that players can run stations in different eras. It starts around 1970, which (creator Brian) Schrader sees as one of the most interesting times for the industry. “That felt like the most accessible start for the game because it’s where you really begin to have the specialization of formats,” he explains. “One of my favorite scenarios to play is where you’re the middle of the road heritage station who has this big audience facing more specialized competition as the decade goes on. You have to decide, ‘what are we going to do?'”...

“You have to really nail down what you want to do.” That includes everything from negotiating talent contracts to deciding on spot loads and more. Additionally, players can generate their own station logos, create jingles, and invest in having a station van if they choose. “Not only does a van look cool, but it does boost your promotional efforts. You’ll get a little extra mileage out of whatever you set your promotion budget at.”
