Say the name Peter Asher and some will give you a blank stare. Yet he's one of the seminal figures of rock and roll as both an artist and a producer, tied in with the Beatles, James Taylor and Linda Ronstadt. Not to mention being half of the hit making 60s duo of Peter & Gordon.
I knew who Peter Asher was, but I'm amazed by the things he's responsible for. In addition to his ties to all those big hits, like "World Without Love," "Nobody I Know" and "Lady Godiva," Asher was the brother of Jane, Paul McCartney's first real girl friend and the two young guys were roomates at one time.
"We were both out on the road quite often, so we didn’t hang out together that much. We were both incredibly busy, but we became friends and we shared the bathroom."
He was also an actor who appeared alongside a horror movie legend, and he produced legendary albums for Barbra Streisand, Diana Ross and Cher - just to name a few.
And oh yeah, he was indirectly responsible for helping John Lennon meet Yoko Ono for the first time. But we won't hold that against him.
Asher is the subject of a new documentary called "Peter Asher, Everywhere Man," and at 83, he's still going strong. I hope that doc turns up here some day. It sounds amazing - like much of the music he brought into the world.
You can not only still hear Asher's music on the radio, you can hear Asher himself - he hosts a weekly show on SiriusXM.
What an unbelievable life.
