They've been used before, but only for random shots. but now for the first time in broadcast history, AppleTV will be using iPhone Pro cellphones to shoot an entire live MLS match. It happens this Saturday at 7:30 PM, when the LA Galaxy plays the Houston Dynasty.
"For the MLS broadcast, crew members with 15 iPhone 17 Pros will be positioned throughout the venue. According to Apple, the small form factor of iPhone allows the production team to shoot “dynamic new perspectives that bring viewers closer to the action.” The iPhone 17 Pro features three 48-megapixel Fusion cameras, offering the equivalent of eight lenses."
Even if you're not a soccer fan, if you have AppleTV you might want to take a peek just to see how this looks. It could be the future of sports TV if it works as well as they hope.

I hope they don’t use vertical mode as this would be awkward to watch. Over on another board, there is an ongoing “discussion”, about vertical vs. horizontal video, and it actually gets nasty at times! I think they’ll go horizontal for a soccer game. BTW, the game time is 7:30 PT, so 10:30 ET, I will try to catch a bit of this! Thanks for the heads up RA.

Definitely horizontal, since most viewing will be on TVs or TV-like monitors.
Generally, long-form = horizontal, short form - vertical.

The results of this experiment are in and they're not entirely positive.
"Viewers...complained about soft wide shots, visible compression, constant refocusing, shaky tracking, and heavier image processing during fast movement across the field.
One viewer joked that watching the broadcast felt like "being at the match also watching through an iPhone 17."
