Some stations don't mark their milestones at all. Others make a big deal out of it. CHNS Halifax chose the latter, celebrating its 100th anniversary in a big way on March 12th. It's a legendary station down east that has been on air since everyone here has been around.
And it has a storied history.
"A household name with connections to the station is legendary Nova Scotia country performer Hank Snow.
"He was offered $15 a week to join the staff of CHNS back in 1933. He took the offer … and actually those performances on CHNS led to his first audition with RCA Victor in 1936. And obviously we know how his career went."
CHNS holds a special memory for me. Now on FM only, it used to be at 960 AM. And it's probably the only station from the far eastern part of the country I was ever able to DX here. It even had a shortwave version, much like CFRB.

The station broadcast a one hour special earlier this week celebrating its birthday and you can hear it below.
