On Thursday, Toronto Mike broke the news that CBC was shutting down its Documentary Channel. But while you won't be able to see it on cable anymore, you can soon watch a brand new version of it online. 

The Corp. announced Friday it was starting its own FAST (Free Ad Supported Television) site on the Internet, which appears to be called CBC Docs. It comes as the mainstream TV industry fades and online viewership grows.

"The new FAST channel will launch in the fall and succeed the discretionary specialty service documentary Channel, which will end broadcast on August 31 due to significant shifts in linear television consumption habits and declining subscribers."

The CBC will also be pouring an additional $7 million into documentary production and the new "channel" promises even more programming than its soon-to-be-gone cable counterpart. 

"This investment will enhance the already extensive slate of CBC documentaries. This includes short and feature films, documentary series, and regional, national and international co-productions, as well as broadcast hours."

The new outlet will come online in the Fall, shortly after the broadcast version shuts down.
