The Niagara Radio Station Where Commercials Are Only 12 Secs. Long

The station is online only and calls itself Auto Rock Radio. It's a commercial radio outlet with a difference - it promises music 98% of the time. And its spots are only 12 secs. each.

Laura Mainella, who worked for stations in Saskatchewan and Woodstock, joined the newcomer because she believes more people are listening online and they're looking for good music - and a lot less clutter.

“The music is what is getting people,” she said. “Every radio station has such a small music catalogue. They have maybe 500 songs that they rotate. You’ll be listening to a song in the morning and then in the afternoon you’ll be driving and go, ‘Oh my God, I just heard that song.’ Because you did hear that song.

“We have almost 5,000 songs.”

With affiliate stations across Canada and the U.S., Auto Rock Radio is geared toward music buffs. It plays not just the classics but deep album cuts rarely heard on regular radio."

The playlist is mainly from the 70s, 80s and 90s. But there's also a country version for those in Eastern Canada.

If you're curious, you can listen here.

Niagara’s new digital radio station cuts the chat, lets the music play

They should do a music test to see what people actually WANT to hear instead of winging it like that.

Haven't music testings led us to where we are today with narrow playlists? "Winging it" only gets you so far so they will have to put their focus somewhere, but in my experience songs that "test well" do so because people are asked if they recognize the song, even though they may not necessarily like it.

Like is a core question, and is scaled. There's also the binaries of familiarity and burn. A station that tests music will bury one that doesn't.

Good to know, thanks.

I used to like/love certain tunes that I now actively avoid. Burn can take a while to set in, so that one feels tougher to gauge.

Yeah, burn takes a while. Lots of factors to consider, but once about 30% of a panel is burnt on a song, you want to start looking at other stats (like how many still absolutely love it). If the positives don’t shine, it’s time to give it a break.
