You may have never heard of the Grant Ave. Studio. It's a mainstay of Hamilton, and boasts a pretty impressive array of stars who have recorded there - including Johnny Cash, Brian Eno and Gordon Lightfoot.
Now the studio that boasted some big names is boasting another milestone - 50 years making some famous music with some equally famous artists. Not to mention well known producer Daniel Lanois.
"Jamie Tennant, local music aficionado and longtime program director at CFMU, McMaster University’s campus and community radio station, says the studio is itself something of a rolling stone gathering momentum under its own movement over the decades.
“Grant's an interesting place because everyone kind of wanted to record there because it had this historical element,” Tennant told CBC Hamilton. “Folk people loved the fact that Gordon Lightfoot has been there, that Johnny Cash recorded there… Real music nerds got excited about the Brian Eno angle, him being there working with Dan Lanois. So it just sort of had this bigger than life reputation.”
The studio plans to mark the milestone with a series of events around Steeltown.

I had heard that Brian Eno had worked in Hamilton but didn’t know where! In the photo of Lanois at the board, there is a coffee cup on the console, a huge no-no back when I was involved in music!

Don't know why they kept Bob Doidge out of this story but here he is last Friday on CHCH morning show playing bass.

Doidge is mentioned in the second paragraph as one of the original founders in 1976, who then sold the studio.

U2 also recorded at Grant Avenue working with their producer Daniel Lanois. The studio produced radio station jingles back in the day.

Proud to say my daughter and husband are partners in Grant Avenue Studio and have been for a few years.
Apparently they had a lion in the studio when doing the jingle for African Lion Safari.
