Lipstick On A Pig? Corus Puts Positive Spin On 2nd Quarter Results
Despite the fact overall revenues are down, the troubled broadcaster tried to put its best face on its 2nd Quarter results, released on Friday.
"Our second‑quarter results reflect improved profitability, primarily driven by programming schedule timing, the absence of certain one‑time costs incurred in the prior year, and ongoing cost‑containment initiatives."
I'm guessing that last point about "cost containment" is a buzz word for layoffs and cutbacks.

I just hate seeing any Canadian private broadcaster struggling, especially one that was at one stage, quite the powerhouse. I blame Shaw for Corus’ woes, and Rogers didn’t help by poaching the two networks Corus invested in and nurtured for a couple of decades. Too bad it wasn’t CBC, but if it was, they’d be bailed out by us!

And that's what's so unfair. Corus Entertainment was & is the owner & operator of two of among the most legendary radio stations in the history of the industry in just the GTA/Golden Horseshoe alone; 102.1 The Edge (CFNY) and Q107. I don't "hate" the CBC or any other public broadcaster for that matter, but if it was them in this situation they would (presumably likely) be simply bailed out at the cost of the taxpayers with no realistic incentive to improve their business or products in any way. At least the private model offers us some hope of some sort of brighter future ahead for the company and their assets.
