An April Fool You May Have Missed: U.S. Stn. Goes All CanCon

For some Canadian radio stations and listeners, having to play a large percentage of CanCon is no laughing matter. But for one day on KKCR in Washington State, it was a hilarious prank.

The station, which brands itself as "Big 95.7," announced it had been bought by a Canuck firm and was immediately changing its format to All Canadian Content All The Time. True to their word (well, as true as you can get with an April First joke,) they began rolling out a playlist featuring nothing but Canadian artists.

But it didn't end there.

"PD/morning man Will Bradley announced the station had been sold to “Maple Leaf Media Properties.” For the next four hours, Big 95.7 played only Canadian artists.

Sweepers declared Bradley to be “part of your morning poutine.” Temperatures were in Celsius. Traffic reports were in kilometers."

Eventually the joke was over, but how ironic that for a few hours, an American station was playing more Canadian content than one north of the border. Well done!

You can check out the temporary playlist here.

A pretty good April Fool prank that took a bit to pull off! I wonder how it went over with their listeners although some of them would have probably clued in.
