Netflix Drops Out Of Bid For Warner Brothers

In a stunning development, Netflix has officially dropped out of the bidding for Warner Brothers, which owns a huge collection of classic movies, as well as CNN and HBO. That leaves Paramount as the only bidder, who kept upping the ante until it was too rich for Netflix's blood.

This is a disturbing development for many, because Paramount is controlled by a billionaire backer of Donald Trump, leading to fears about the editorial freedom of the world's first cable news network. (Paramount currently owns CBS, whose news division has undergone drastic changes since the takeover.)

And then there's the issue of job losses and what so few owning so much might mean for so many in the industry.

"Executives at Paramount have argued that merging will be good for consumers and the wider industry. But lawmakers and entertainment trade groups have sounded the alarm — warning that a Warner takeover would only further consolidate power in an industry already run by just a few major players. Critics say that could result in job losses, less diversity in filmmaking and potentially more headaches for consumers who are facing rising costs of streaming subscriptions as is."

The deal, if it happens, would still have to be approved by federal regulators in the U.S.

Hard to say what this all might mean for Canadians, but both Netflix and Paramount+ are available streamers on this side of the border.

Let's not worry about influence on foreign media. What has occurred in Canada this past year is contemptible.

The Canadian media has done a pretty good job of making Canadians worry more about what's going on outside their country than inside.

Re: Netflix Drops Out Of Bid For Warner Brothers

This is actually very scary. If this deal for Warner Bros. is approved, Larry Ellison and his family will control:

-One of the biggest movie companies on the planet, with a tremendous catalog that includes "Gone With The Wind" and the "Wizard of Oz." Not to mention Paramount, another powerful moviemaker with an equally impressive back catalog.

-CNN, the all news network

-Cable stations, including TBS, TNT, The Food Network, HGTV, Discovery, Turner Classic Movies, and The Cartoon Network - and that's a partial list.

-HBO & HBOMax, arguably the crown jewel of cable movie networks.

-CBS, the #1 broadcast network in the U.S. by ratings. Not to mention CBS News, which is already at the centre of controversy.

-Paramount+, the streaming company that also owns the Star Trek franchise.

-TikTok, the American version, as a co-owner.

-And Oracle, a data company, that launched the company's path to fortune.

Regardless of politics, that seems like way too much control of way too many valuable media franchises for one company to reasonably be in charge of.

Maybe wishful thinking but I see an AT&T type breakup down the road.   .

In tribute to the takeover of a company that once produced Looney Tunes...

No doubt the take over of CNN will be the CBSization of the network. We will go from tepid and neutered to blackout, although I must say that they have probably been the best American network in covering the war.

Here's what Pete( time for the mute button) Hegseth said this morning and I wonder if the network will address his comments:

For decades, Iran has threatened shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. This is always what they do, hold the strait hostage. CNN doesn't think we thought of that. It's a fundamentally unserious report," Hegseth said. "The sooner David Ellison takes over that network, the better."
