Radio Ink asked two veteran programmers for their lists of the top 20 Top 40 stations of all time. Their choices are mostly different, but CKLW makes both of them - with CHUM coming in on one of the lists. I love the fact that WMCA New York beats WABC in one and that WKBW makes both of them.
To me the most serious omission may well be the mid-1970s incarnation of WGAR Cleveland, which had some of the best talent - including Imus in the Morning, Vernon with a V and the Real Bob James, all of whom would later surface in New York, the #1 market in the world. And I have a special affection for the now defunct mid-70s WNBC in that city, which was all personality Top 40 and to this day is the most entertaining station I've ever heard, regardless of format.
Here's the entire list.
