NYC DJ Sets New Radio Record - & There's a Toronto Tie-In

If someone asked you who was the longest running regular radio morning host in New York City history, you might guess Dan Ingram (actually, afternoons), Cousin Brucie (evenings) or maybe even Joe Franklin, who was on the air there for over 40 years.

But you'd be wrong.

The reigning longevity king of Manhattan and beyond is a guy named Jim Kerr, who just completed 50 years on the air in the world's biggest media market, and has just reupped for another five years doing mornings on Q104.3, WAXQ. (He previously worked at other stations in the city.)

He says he feels lucky to be able to do the one thing he's always wanted since he was five years old. Now decades later, he's still on the air and still getting good ratings. (Some in Windsor may remember when he worked for WNKR-FM in Detroit.)

So what's the Toronto tie-in? It's Joe Cristiano, who has been the producer of CFRB's "Moore In The Morning" for the past five years and frequently makes an appearance on the show. Cristiano produced the Kerr show for 14 and a half years before relocating from the Big Apple to the Big Smoke, and he's still behind the scenes of the long running 1010 morning program. I've often wondered how he ended up here but his presence clearly helps the Moore show run fairly smoothly.

Fifty-five years on the air in the top market is quite an amazing record for Kerr, and, given the current state of the biz, one that's not likely to ever be broken.

Not to be confused with Jim Kerr, the lead vocalist for Simple Minds, one of my favourite 80s bands!
