What Would Happen If You Used A Radio Transmitting Tower For DXing FM?

It seems impossible to believe, but someone did it. It happened in a place called Eckelson, North Dakota, when an FM tower lost power and work was underway to try and restore it. So in the meantime, a veteran signal searcher and engineer tried to see what he could get using that antenna as, well, an antenna. And the results were reportedly astounding.

It's unlikely you'll ever be able to do this yourself, but at least one veteran DXer recommends trying it in a place where you could set up a rig - the resort town of Lake Louise, Alberta.

“Lake Louise now has two CBC transmitters nearby. When I first went up there in the 1980s, the only thing on FM was an aural TV transmitter on 87.75. At Lake Louise, just pick any frequency and sit for a while.

“Guaranteed to hear meteor scatter,” [signal enthusiast Karl] Zuk said."
