It seems almost impossible to believe, but there's a radio soap opera that's not only still on the air after drama has long disappeared from the airwaves, but it's still going strong an incredible 75 years after it first debuted. It's called "The Archers" and you'll have to either live in the U.K. or stream it to hear it.
Thousands do. And either way, it's earned its place in history..
“The Archers,” recognized by Guinness World Records as the longest-running serial drama on the planet, is steaming, strong as ever, into the streaming age. After more than 28,000 episodes, the show, which began as semi-instructional infotainment for struggling postwar farmers, endures as a real-time chronicle of ever-evolving, never-changing modern Britain."
Even more amazing, in an era where radio is fading, this veteran series attracts a lot of young ears, most via streaming. But they're out there - and they're listening. It airs six nights a week on the BBC, with a longer recap on Sundays. And many of the actors portraying the characters have been on the show for years, their characters aging as the program continues and continues and continues. It's kind of like a radio version of The Simpsons for the actors - seemingly a job for life.
It's hard to fathom a 1950's soap opera is still around all these years later, but I guess some shows are timeless. It appears these Archers are still hitting their target more than seven decades on.
After 75 years, a radio soap opera still has Britain on edge of its seat
