Starting Monday, there will be a new face on U.S. evening network news. Tony Dukoupil isn't exactly a household name, although he's been on the air for a while hosting the CBS morning show. That all changes Jan. 5th, when he officially debuts as the sole anchor of the revamped CBS Evening News.
CBS News has been surrounded by controversy for the past year, accused of bowing to pressure for more favourable coverage from the U.S. government. But in a remarkable address to viewers, the new guy vows he won't give in to corporate pressure and promises to tell the truth as he knows it.
"Here’s my promise to you as long as I sit in this chair: you come first. Not advertisers. Not politicians. Not corporate interests. And, yes, that does include the corporate owners of CBS.
I report for you."
Can he keep that promise? We'll find out when he starts on Monday.

No, I don't think so. He or his overlord in the news deivsion, reports to Ms. Barri Weiss, a terribly unqualified exec. who was brought in by Paramount, prior to the sale to the Trump-friendly Ellison family. She had no experience in TV news, and her departure from the New York Times was mired in controversy a few years ago. She's the person who over-rode the managers at 60 minutes in December on the El Salvador prison story.

That's a very outdated graphic. There's no more Time Warner, Comcast has spun off MSNBC, CNBC and most of the rest of its cable networks, CW now belongs to Nexstar, etc...

The situation with Venezuela forced CBS to unveil Tony Dukoupil, their new evening news anchor, two days earlier than planned. He fronted the 6:30 PM show on Saturday night, noting he was making an early debut. Another bizarre network first.

Also, Tony Doukoupil anchored the show from San Francisco, possibly at the CBS owned-and-operated station there.

Here is a quick montage of his "official" debut. They seem to be using the Dan Rather era theme music. And he was a little aggressive, when there was a mistake. Take a look at 6:45 in the video.

The reviews have not been good, especially after that horribly embarrassing glitch, in which he didn’t know what story they were going to next. Instead of covering like a pro would do, he actually stopped altogether and tried to figure out what was going on while still on camera, apparently talking to his producer. The silence felt loud, long but also deafening. It was, in a compound word, cringe-worthy.
You can see that part isolated here.
Worth noting, he was the network’s third choice as anchor. They tried to get Fox News’ Bret Baier and CNN’s Anderson Cooper, but both turned them down. At a time when CBS News is under so much scrutiny, that now seems like a wise move.
Variety’s review of Tony Dokoupil’s debut was less than flattering. Most others I read had similar pans.

CBS has edited out the mistake that has become something of a cause celebre. It's no longer on its YouTube page. But it's still in the link above, because that one wasn't from the network itself.
I'm not surprised they did this - I likely would have taken it out, too, so his debut was not always tainted by it. But it still happened, and that's worth remembering.
CBS News Removes Tony Dokoupil Flub From CBS Evening News on YouTube

CBS rhymes with "mess."
And never has a sound alike word seemed more apt.
Since Tony Dokoupil took over the CBS Evening News just a short five days ago, his name has been making headlines - for all the wrong reasons. Already, a senior CBS producer has walked the plank, possibly for how badly the first week of his shows have been.
And now Variety, which is known as the Bible of Showbiz, has taken the new anchorman to task for his first week on the air, characterized by flubs, poorly thought out news choices and even embarrassing moments of ego. It's a bitter Dokoupil to swallow. And it looks like viewers aren't.
