The sports part of the newscast is deliberately set up for stations who want to cut away after the news to go back to their own programming. (If you listen closely, you'll notice that long pause before the reader says "in sports...")

Unfortunately on some stations, automated or otherwise, they always seem to miss it and it just makes it sound sloppy. 

It's the individual station's fault, not CP.
