Its easy to go after CTV for all of the mistakes that they make, most of it justified, but on there youtube channel they got it right. The weather this week across Southwestern and Northern Ontario has not been good. To CTV credit they put the full newscast from London and Sudbury on there YouTube channel. To CTV London credit they still cover Midwestern Ontario( CKNX area), and up in Sudbury ( remember at one time this was 4 separate tv stations) had 5 local weather forecasts.
With all the cuts to the local newsrooms at least they got this part right.

Environment Canada has just overhauled it's weather warning schema. I suspect that few in commercial broadcast media will be able to comprehend the changes.

All of the local newscasts mentioned the new colour coded method this week and tried to explain it, taking up way too much time for the actual forecast. But it should quickly just become another part of the segment, once everyone gets used to it.

It just boggles my mind that the flagship CTV station doesn't have enough weather anchors to fill the week.

Which brings up the question: will CTV Toronto's 6 PM news show bring in either Jessica Smith or Lyndsay Morrison for a Sunday shift, after another weekend snowfall in the city? They really should have someone, because usually after an early winter storm, there's high interest in what happens during the work week to come.
And a fumfering anchor weather read just doesn't cut it.

“Fumfering”, now there’s a word you don’t hear every day, especially if it’s mumbled!

I watched CTV Kitchener’s 6PM newscast on Friday and guess who had to do the weather segments. Yep Tony Grace had to read the weather graphics from the anchor desk because there was no one else to do the weather. I know Tony had a little trouble reading the on screen graphics but it does remind me of CTV Toronto’s weekend newscasts. But I found CTV London’s weather segements done better in more detail because there was a weather person like Reta Ismail. That was the reasonI had to switch back to CTV London’s newscast.

Speaking of CTV weather, here's something you don't see very often. On their noon news, Lyndsay Morrison was doing the weather and while at the highs & lows board, a giant shadow of a giant camera came into the shot and stayed in the frame blocking part of the map for a good 20-30 secs. or more. (See pics below)
She wisely didn't say anything, if she even knew it was in the shot, but just kept going. Finally, after what felt like an eternity, you could see the thing being dollyed backward and out of the other camera's range. I'm not sure if CTV uses robotic controlled cameras like some places do, but this was something that happened a lot on live 50s TV that you rarely see in these more technically smooth modern day shows.

I have noticed that when London doesn’t have a weather person available, they grab someone from CTV Windsor.
You would think CFTO could borrow a weatherperson from any number of Ontario CTV stations if they’re that desperate.

Some good points have been made here. But over at Global, they can have 1 person do the local weather on 6 or 7 stations, but CTV cannot.
And here is a fun note. When I went onto the CTV News website, and looked at the subcategories under the local stations, only Toronto has a subcategory just for the weather.

I can almost see not having an honest-to-God forecaster during the summer months. It's often the same thing: 25C with a chance of showers, day after day.
But in the winter, when snow can be paralyzing and there's a near white-out in one part of the city and nothing a few minutes away, it's really nice to have someone who knows what they're talking about (or at least have seen the weather maps before they show up on screen) to tell you what it all means.
The fact cities like London, Windsor or Kitchener manage to have a weather presenter 7-days-a-week while the largest market on the supposed #1 newscast in Toronto (can anyone actually confirm this?) doesn't, is a real insult to viewers. Not that Bell cares what anyone thinks. As long as they save money on a useless thing like a salary.
I guess that's the way the wind blows. Not that you'll know about it watching CFTO.
